Artist's Biography:
Theresa began her studies during a year abroad in Rome. The exposure to Italian art inspired her to paint in a traditional style. She furthered her studies by copying old masters, a life changing, illuminating experience: 'Not only did I learn technique and design but at times also had a feeling of being inside the artist’s head.'
After moving to Gloucester, MA, she visited an exhibition at the Rockport Art Association in Rockport, MA where she saw a magnificent painting of the English countryside by David Curtis. Shortly afterward she began landscape studies with David. David introduced her to Robert Cormier, then President of the Guild of Boston Artists. After taking portrait classes with Cormier she began studies with him at the R. H. Ives Gammell Atelier. She completed an intense program like that of the 19th century French academies: cast, figure, portrait drawing and still life painting. At the same time, she continued her landscape studies, drawing inspiration from the beauty of Cape Ann. She furthered her studies working with prominent artist and teacher, Paul Ingbretson, former President of the Guild of Boston artists, Paul Ingbretson Studios of Drawing and Painting, Lawrence, MA.
Theresa's strongest painting influence was and is the subtle abstraction of the great painter Henri Fantin Latour. His wonderful flower compositions, exact draftsmanship and light exemplify the most important elements in a painting. Something different and unique to him is also present; his flowers look alive in the natural light which he was able to capture perfectly. Other influences include the French Impressionists, the Boston School painters and the painters of the Italian Renaissance.
Theresa began exhibiting, winning several national awards including Best in Show at the American Artists Professional League, NYC, Best in Show at the Academic Artists Association, Springfield, MA, American Artists Magazine Salmagundi Club Pastel Award, NYC, the Paul Strisik Medal for Painting, Rockport Art Association and several Helen De Cozen Awards for Floral Still Life at AAPL. Theresa has also been a featured artist in American Artist Magazine.
